JJ Mac Case Study

The Challenge

JJMac were contracted by Galliford try to construct a shaft 12x12m in area and 8metres deep within a Biomass facility. Galliford Try were acting as the Principle Contractor and working for Biomass UK No. 3 Ltd who owned and operated the Biomass facility.

The Solution

The construction consisted of installing trench sheets around the perimeter of the shaft, driven with an excavator mounted sheet piling hammer. Due to the pre-driven precast concrete piles within the area of excavation, the site crew were restricted and unable to use a large excavator to carry out a lot the bulk excavation. The only solution was to use a 5ton excavator in the shaft, to complete the bulk excavation.

Engineering Layers

The shafts required precise planning and supervision and was classified as a low risk confined space. All confined space working measures had to be implemented with the construction constantly monitored by the Galliford try.
